Sears to close as Hillsdale revamp proceeds: San Mateo Planning Commission to consider future of shopping center

  • Would a movie theater, open air restaurants, bowling alley, and a fitness center attract you to the Hillsdale shopping area?
  • Do you think the shopping center owners made a good choice to pass on Target in favor of mixed entertainment?

  • How will these new entertainment options impact the other stores in the Hillsdale mall? Will these additions impact the overall city economy?

  2. I am surprised that Sears is closing because it has been around for such a long time and It just seemed like a big enough store where it would never close down. I think adding a movie theater, restaurants, a bowling alley, etc. would be great publicity for San Mateo. Also great publicity for Hillsdale Mall too. However, bringing all this exciting new entertaining options to Hillsdale will bring more people and I don't think We'll have enough parking. Unless the build another parking lot.

  3. I think that removing sears and placing new types of entertainment and more stores would actually attract lots of people, including me to Hillsdale shopping center. I did not think that Hillsdale was a great place, I think that downtown is the center of San Mateo, but with the new design, then I think the popularity of downtown would switch to the mall. Moreover, it would give Hillsdale more business. Instead of having another Target, because there is one just a few miles away from the mall, it would make more money. With more people coming, and increase in business, it would overall improve the economy.

  4. I think that it would attract me to go to the Hillsdale mall more but we already have a movie theater downtown, and we already have a bowling alley in Belmont. I think it would be popular when they first open out, but after a while I think people are going to get tried of it quickly. Getting rid of sears isn't a bad idea because they don't make enough money anyways and isn't that popular.

    - Yes I feel that these added attractions would definitely add more human traffic into the mall. Because yes I feel that our mall is great but it only has so much stores and restaurant to attract costumers. When they add the movie theaters into sears the mall is going to be more popular in the bay area.
